I went to the Northern Territory several years ago for 10 days with my family as I had won a competition. The prize was a family holiday that included flights, car hire, attractions and accommodation. We flew into Darwin and the heat hit us like a brick wall but we got used to it.

We toured around Darwin for a day and then it was off to Kakadu where we spent four nights and saw Aboriginal attractions and cave art. On the way to Kakadu we did a Jumping Crocodile Tour and learnt all sorts of things about crocodiles. We found out that freshwater crocodiles are smaller than the saltwater ones and will try to avoid you whereas the saltwater crocodiles see you as food and will go for you. We took some amazing photos of the crocodiles in their natural element. That was one of the highlights of the trip.

We drove down to Katherine and went on a tour of the Katherine Gorge. Nothing had quite prepared us for the solitude and the awesome sights of the Gorge. It was certainly the biggest highlight of the whole trip as it was nature unveiled to us in all of its glory.

After Katherine we drove back up to Darwin and spent a few days there before going home. The only low point of the trip was the red-eye flight back home as we left Darwin at midnight. Our travelling style was very much a fly and drive, which was a really good way to have a holiday.
