The world's largest airline, Delta Airways, will begin flights to Australia on Friday.

Delta's inaugural flight into Sydney from Los Angeles will make the airline the fourth international carrier to fly between Australia and the United States.

It joins Qantas, V Australia and United Airlines on the trans-Pacific route which was previously dominated by just two carriers.

NSW Tourism Minister Jodi McKay said the move would be a great boost for NSW tourism and potentially bring more than 50,000 additional inbound travellers to Sydney each year.

"This increase in visitors will provide a boost to the NSW economy and create more opportunities for the state's tourism industry and more jobs for the people of NSW," Ms McKay said in a statement.

She said Delta would not only bring more American business and holiday visitors to NSW, but also see Sydney's profile grow in the United States.
